About Kathy Kelly
Hi and welcome to my Galleries. I'm a nature photographer turned digital artist. The goal of this work is to inspire others to take a moment and seek out the beauty and wonder in the world around them, as well as within their own imaginations.
In today's faced paced world, it's so easy to overlook the joys and simple pleasures that surround us. The Osprey nest in the tree above our heads, the elusive fox raising its kits just minutes from our doorstep, the way the moonlight reflects off a mountain lake, often all go unnoticed as we go about our daily lives.
Taking up photography forced me to live in the present; to observe life as it played out in 'real time.' Whether marveling at a sunset in New Zealand, admiring the colors and textures of a local Grill on the Oregon coastline, or finding the humor and mystery of the sleeping Welsh Corgi at my side, I quickly realized that life's greatest dramas often play out right in front of us. Nor is the human experience limited to just the factual and concrete.
Life is a journey of exploration both of what is physically around us as well as what we imagine 'could be.' Hence mankind's fascination with the unseen, undiscovered, and fantastical. We see evidence of this throughout human culture in folklore and mankind's continuous quest to explore the heavens.
While books and blogs have been written to describe our physical world and the human experience, I find visual expression to be the most powerful and persuasive form of communication. Aside from music, another compelling and influential medium, visual expression eliminates language and physical barriers. Not only can it give the written word color, shape, and form, it can also evoke and convey feelings and emotions that the written word often cannot. Visual expression can even propel us into new and unseen worlds and realities with a single glance. Consequently, my work reflects a range of human experiences, from the realistic and concrete to the fantastical and abstract.
For years I enjoyed painting using oils and acrylics. However, as time passed they required physical resources that became increasing difficult to attain (e.g., physical space, art supplies, etc.) and like any medium, they had their limitations. Today, I employ digital technologies in many of my pieces. While some artists may view the use of electronic software as cold and uninviting, I find it liberating. Advances in digital software have given me the ability to express feelings and ideas that before were too difficult to convey using more traditional forms of media. Instead of merely documenting a scene, I can paint a story, challenge reality, and experiment with visual components much easier than I could using acrylic or oils. As my skill with digital software has improved and expanded, so has my visual vocabulary, subject matter, and forms of expression.
If you see a piece of artwork you like, please feel free to comment on it. I hope you enjoy my galleries.
