Description
One of the oldest of the toy spaniels, the Papillon (butterfly in French) derives its name from its characteristic butterfly-like look of its long fringed hair on its ears. Intelligent, playful, and affectionate, these dogs are high-energy and require routine exercise. Due to their single coated fur, Papillons don't shed like dogs with double coats. Found in array of colors, the breed has two ear variations, the completely upright ears of the more common Papillon and the dropped spaniel ears of the Phalene.
Papillons have a long history with royalty and are seen in numerous paintings throughout Europe. Marie Antoinette was said to have walked to the guillotine clutching her Papillon under her arm. Fortunately, the dog was spared his owner's fate and was cared for in a building in Paris still called the Papillon House.
