Description
Taken by Kathy Kelly, this Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly, or Papilio troilus Linnaeus, is one of the most beautiful and interesting of the swallowtails. One often finds it in natural areas and flower gardens throughout the eastern and parts of the mid-western United States. I found this one enjoying a Flame Zinnia in a garden just a short distance from my home in Maryland.
While beautiful as a butterfly, the Spicebush is just as exotic and fascinating as a caterpillar. To scare off birds, the caterpillar resembles bird droppings when very young. As it grows, it turns green and develops two large spots that resemble a large pair of eyes. A bird investigating a rolled up leaf with the caterpillar inside suddenly thinks it has confronted by a "snake" and backs off.
