Description
I photographed this beautiful Eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly (Papilio glaucus) in an orchard not far from my home. Busy gathering nectar from a group of Zowie Yellow Flame Zinnias, she hardly noticed me.
This species of swallowtail is native to eastern North America and is one of the most familiar butterflies east of the Mississippi river. That said, it can also be found as far West as the Great Plains states. Its wingspan can range in measurement from 3.1 to 5.5 inches. Common habitats include woodlands, fields, rivers, creeks, roadsides, and gardens. It will also stray into urban parks and city yards.
