Description
With my husband at the wheel of our car, we followed this handsome Great Blue Heron after it took flight along the banks of Merret Wildlife Refuge in Masac, Illinois. We managed to pull up beside it at which time I photographed it.
Great blue herons are typically found around water, but occupy wide variety of wet habitats. They can be found hunting among rocky cascades, on streams and rivers, coastal beaches, swamps, and tidal marshes. They can even be found prowling meadows, farmlands, or backyards with fish ponds. Great blues are found throughout Maryland year-round, as some individuals spend the winter in the state, while others migrate south.
