Description
A portrait of a Great egret flying over wetlands. This one was photographed while I was in Acapulco, Mexico. We were visiting the Laguna de Tres Palos located just east of the city. This fresh-water lagoon is great for viewing wildlife. There I saw numerous Great Egrets as well as their smaller version... the Snowy Egret. Unlike Great Egrets which have yellow-orange bills, the Snowy Egret are much smaller and have a black bill.
Egrets are herons which have white or buff plumage, and develop fine plumes (usually milky white) during the breeding season. Both are long-legged, freshwater, coastal birds with S shaped necks, that often stand immobile or wade through wetlands to capture fish with a deadly jab of their bills. Crustaceans, insects, small reptiles, snails, frogs, worms, mice and crayfish are also on the menu.
