While traveling through the back roads in Baja California, we came across a juvenile Crested Caracara perched high in the trees where it could easily spot its prey.
The Crested Caracara is an opportunist and is commonly seen walking about open fields and besides roads feeding on a variety of prey as well as carrion. Often described as having the instincts of an eagle and the carrion feeding habits of a vulture, this raptor is striking with its bold black and white plumage (in adults), blue beak, and bright yellow-orange face. Adult pairs are also generally monogamous and highly territorial. While mostly found in Middle and South America, some populations are still left in Texas, Arizona, as well as in the coastal areas of the Gulf states like Florida.
Also known as the Mexican Eagle, the Caracara is actually from the family falcons. This piece has been featured in the following FAA Groups and Contests.
