This photograph, taken by Kathy Kelly, is of a yellow hibiscus. These flowers come in a range of colors, some with veins of different colors toward the center.
The hibiscus is the unofficial national flower of Haiti. The yellow hibiscus, as seen here, is called the Hawaiian hibiscus (Hibiscus brackenridgei). It became the Hawaiian official state flower in 1988, despite it not being native to the Hawaiian Islands.
This is Hawaiis second official state flower. The first state flower was the red hibiscus (Hibiscus kokio) which is native to Hawaii and often worn by young women.
