Description
Just 9 miles outside of Mitchell Oregon in the high desert is the Painted Hills National Park. The Painted Hills get their name from the delicately colored stratification in the soil. This area preserves a sequence of past climate change and contains a diverse assemblage of leaf fossils aging 39-30 million years old. The Painted Hills are one of three units that comprise the John Day Fossil Beds.
