Description
I photographed this owl at a wildlife sanctuary in Rockville Maryland. The great horned owl, also known as the hoot owl, is a large raptor native to the Americas. It is an extremely adaptable bird with a vast range and is the most widely distributed true owl in the Americas. The characteristic hooting call of the great horned owl is a low-pitched, solemn 'who-hoo-ho-oo'. Often depicted in Halloween decorations.
The Great Horned Owl hunts mostly at night and at dusk. Its prey includes rabbits, hawks, geese, ducks, snakes, and even skunks, and will even attack porcupines, often with fatal results for both prey and predator.
