Description
One of the joys of living in the country is seeing the Red Bellied Woodpecker at our feeder. The males have a continuous red cap while the females tend to have more silver/gray on their heads.
The Red Bellied Woodpecker breeds mainly in the eastern United States, ranging as far south as Florida and as far north as Canada. Its name is somewhat misleading, as the most prominent red part of its plumage is on the head, and not on its belly.

I often spot woodpeckers on my hikes, first by the sound of them at work. I love seeing juveniles, learning from their parent how to work a feeder. You can listen, and watch for chunks of wood falling from a tree to lead you upward to the industrious insect removal crew.
