Heron in the Woods Canvas Print

This photograph by Kathy Kelly is of a Great Blue Heron standing in the Woods near the banks of the C & O Canal in Maryland. With a look of disdain, this fellow rules his domain.

Great blue herons are typically found around water, but occupy wide variety of wet habitats. They can be found hunting among rocky cascades, on streams and rivers, coastal beaches, swamps, and tidal marshes. They can even be found prowling meadows, farmlands, or backyards with fish ponds. Great blues are found throughout Maryland year-round, as some individuals spend the winter in the state, while others migrate south.
