Description
The horse is a powerful, noble, and graceful animal. I grew up with these beautiful creatures and as a child learned how to ride on an 18-hand grey thoroughbred gelding named Timmy.
Despite his size and speed, Timmy was very gentle. When I fell off, Timmy would stop in his tracks. He'd turn around, walk over to where I laid on the ground, lean over me with his long graceful neck, and nuzzle my shoulder. His large brown eyes imploring me to get up. My family nicknamed him our "Gentle Giant." Timmy lived to be 33 years old.
Humans began to domesticate horses around 4000 BC. Horse breeds are loosely divided into three categories based on general temperament: spirited "hot bloods" with speed and endurance; "cold bloods", such as draft horses and some ponies, suitable for slow, heavy work; and "warm-bloods", developed from crosses between hot bloods and cold bloods, often focusing on creating breeds for specific riding purposes.
