Great blue herons are typically found around water, but occupy wide variety of wet habitats. They can be found hunting among rocky cascades, on streams and rivers, coastal beaches, swamps, and tidal marshes. They can even be found prowling meadows, farmlands, or backyards with fish ponds. Great blues are found throughout Maryland year-round, as some individuals spend the winter in the state, while others migrate south.

My acupuncturist told me herons are very territorial. If you have a koi pond, you have to put up a heron scarecrow to keep your koi from being plucked. Even koi aren't too much for a hungry heron.
