It's springtime and the banks along the Potomac River are awash in a carpet of Virginia Bluebells. With their bright green leaves and contrasting drooping bell-like blossoms, these flowers are "a buzz" with the sound of bumblebees.
Busily foraging for pollen and nectar to take back to the nest, the Eastern bumblebee is a large, loud, and social creature. And while it may appear intimidating at first, it is, in fact, very gentle and rarely stings.
This photograph, taken by Kathy Kelly, shows an Eastern bumblebee in mid flight about to land on a Virginia Bluebell flower.
