Description
Photographed in Paducah Kentucky in Noble Park, this beautiful Wood Duck Hen paid little attention to me as it glided across the lake. My husband and I searched for days for a male Wood Duck but without success.
The Wood Duck is one of the most stunningly pretty of all waterfowl and unlike most waterfowl, Wood Ducks perch and nest in trees and are comfortable flying through woods.
By the beginning of the 20th century, wood ducks had virtually disappeared from much of their former range due habitat destruction and hunting.
The population has slowly increased partly due to greater protection and landowners and park managers building wood duck nest boxes near lakes, ponds, and streams.
