Description
The sun is setting as this handsome Great Horned Owl stands watch over his domain.
I photographed this handsome owl in Rockville, Maryland where they are plentiful and often heard at night. The great horned owl, also known as the hoot owl, is a large raptor native to the Americas. It is an extremely adaptable bird with a vast range and is the most widely distributed true owl in the Americas. The characteristic hooting call of the great horned owl is a low-pitched, solemn 'who-hoo-ho-oo'. Often depicted in Halloween decorations.
The Great Horned Owl hunts mostly at night and at dusk. Its prey includes rabbits, hawks, geese, ducks, snakes, and even skunks, and will even attack porcupines, often with fatal results for both prey and predator.
