Description
The adorable Eastern Screech Owl is a small, stocky raptor, with a large head and almost no neck. Its wings are rounded; its tail is short and square. Pointed ear tufts are often raised, lending its head a distinctive silhouette. Eastern screech owls have 2 color morphs: a red form and a gray form (other owl in the East is red) and all have yellow eyes.
They are plentiful here in Maryland but are heard than seen. Perfectly camouflaged against tree bark, the Eastern Screech Owl uses an array of calls ranging from a soft trill to an eerie, almost frightening, screech similar to that of a baby crying.
