This colorful and semi-abstract piece by Kathy Kelly depicts a "painted" Lionfish. This beautiful fish is easily recognizable by its long venomous spines, flashy fins, and bright stripes. While it comes in an array of colors, most tend to be orange-burgundy with black or white stripes.
Native to the Indo-Pacifc region and the Red Sea, the Lionfish now occupies the Western Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, where they are considered an invasive species.
Lionfish, also called turkey fish, dragon fish and scorpion fish, can grow up to 15 inches and weight up to 2.6 lbs. Its average life span in the wild is up to 15 years.
