Description
I photographed this handsome Osprey in Bend Oregon on a bright sunny day. Its nest was situated high in a tree overlooking the Deschutes River.
The Osprey is a large black-and-white hawk with long narrow wings, long legs, and a distinctive M-shaped flight profile. It is found on every continent except Antarctica. Ospreys are superb fishers and indeed eat little else hence its nick names "fish hawk" "river hawk" and "fish eagle." Consequently, these beautiful birds can be found near ponds, rivers, lakes, and coastal waterways around the world.
Ospreys live an average of 30 years and usually mate for life. During the 1950s and 1960s Osprey populations declined drastically due to the toxic effects of insecticides such as DDT which interfered with the bird's reproduction system. Populations recovered with the banning of DDT in many countries.

Beautiful. You can see where the ancient got the inspiration for griffins. Love it.
