Description
This is a portrait of two nuthatches eyeing each other while on a trellis. I adore nuthatches and often see them at my feeder here in Maryland. The ones pictured in this work are a Red-breasted Nuthatch (top left) and a White-breasted Nuthatch (bottom right).
Both are monogamous, active, long-billed, short-tailed songbirds. I often see them doing acrobats on our oak trees where they love to "creep" often head downward or even up-side-down, while probing the bark for seeds and insects.
While both varieties are found throughout North America, Red-breasted Nuthatches prefer coniferous forests (fur and spruce trees) while the White-breasted Nuthatch prefers deciduous forests.
