In 2004, we traveled to Salzburg Austria and visited the Mirabell Palace and Gardens or "Schloss Mirabell" as it is called in German. It was a beautiful setting and perfect for picture taking.
The palace was built about 1606 at the request of Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich Raitenau as a residence for his mistress Salome Alt. When Raitenau was deposed and arrested in 1612, Alt and her family were expelled and the palace received its current name " mirabile bella" meaning "amazing wonderful" in Italian.
The palace was rebuilt in a lavish Baroque style from 1710, according to plans designed by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. The current Neoclassical appearance dates from about 1818, when the place was restored after a blaze.
The palace's geometrically-arranged gardens contain four groups of mythology-themed statues dating from 1730 (Aeneas, Hercules, Paris and Pluto) created by Italian sculptor Ottavio Mosto from 1690. The gardens are also known for thei...
