Description
Meet Theodore! this handsome Eastern Chipmunk, photographed by Kathy Kelly, is a regular visitor to our bird feeder and gardens. Living in a den at the base of our oak tree, Theodore already has a good start on his winter supplies.
As part of the squirrel family, the Eastern Chipmunk looks similar to their bushy-tailed cousins but are smaller, with reddish-brown fur, and alternating light and dark stripes along their cheeks and backs. The Eastern Chipmunk also has light stripes above and below its eyes and pouched cheeks that it uses to store and carry food.
Although chipmunks hibernate, they do not store fat. Instead they slowly gnaw away at their summer bounty throughout the winter. Amazingly enough, one chipmunk can gather up to 165 acorns in a day and in two days, it can collect enough food to last an entire winter.
While chipmunks are solitary creatures, they can be quite vocal as they gather food or look for a mate. They get their name from the "chip-chip" sound that they make.
