Description
This photograph taken by Kathy Kelly depicts a beautiful yellow Hibiscus lit up at night. This is a common sight for those visiting tropical vacation spots such as Florida, Hawaii, California, or if one travels to Haiti, India or Malaysia.
There are hundreds of species of hibiscus flowers and they come in a variety of sizes and colors. However, most sport five lobed petals around a stalked center.
The hibiscus is the unofficial national flower of Haiti. The yellow hibiscus, as seen here, is called the Hawaiian hibiscus (Hibiscus brackenridgei). It became the Hawaiian official state flower in 1988, despite it not being native to the Hawaiian Islands. This is Hawaiis second official state flower. The first state flower was the red hibiscus (Hibiscus kokio) which is native to Hawaii and often worn by young women.
