Description
This color photograph by Kathy Kelly is of an abandoned old country barn located in Montgomery County, Maryland. Once used for horses, it is now empty and abandoned - its newer and more colorful replacement only a few acres away. Taken in April, this weathered gray structure made an interesting contrast to the bright green leaves of early spring.
Montgomery County Maryland is historically known for agriculture. In the 1600's slaves and tenant farmers came to this area to grow tobacco. This one crop dominated much of the landscape until the mid 1880's when the soil had become so depleted, that one fifth of the county's population left in search of greener pastures. The Quakers of Sandy Spring, however, stayed and experimented with crop rotation and fertilizer.
By the late 1800's and early 1900's agriculture was once again thriving in Montgomery County thanks,in part, to the opening of a new shipping lane - the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal.
In the 20th century, dairy and horse farms had taken over much of the county's farmland and within the past 35 years, many of the county's larger farms have turned into historical preservation sites, private homes, and places for entertainment and tourism.
