Description
After photographing animals for several years, this is first time one ever gave me a "dirty look." I had to approach him very carefully. Like all swans, black swans will aggressively defend their nests with their wings and beaks. Moreover, they are a large waterbird. A mature black swan measures between 43 and 56 inches in length and can weigh as much as 20 lbs. It has a long graceful neck (relatively the longest neck among the swans) and curved in an "S"-shape.
Mainly found in the southeast and southwest regions of Australia, black swans were introduced to various countries as an ornamental bird in the 1800s.
Like other swans, the black swan is largely monogamous. However, recent studies have shown that around a third of all broods exhibit extra-pair paternity. An estimated one-quarter of all pairings are homosexual, mostly between males. They steal nests, or form temporary threesomes with females to obtain eggs, driving away the female after she lays the eggs.
