Description
This lovely Black Rat snake and I played a wonderful game of "Hide and seek." This one was hunting for bird eggs or field mice. She was full grown, about 5 feet long, thick bodied, and a powerful constrictor. Watching her climb among the bushes was mesmerizing.
The Black Rat snake is a large non-venomous constrictor that can grow up to 7 feet in length. They have shiny black scales on their backs and light colored bellies. Their throats and chins are white. Mostly found in fields, woodlands and around farms, their prey usually consists of mice, bird eggs, and frogs.
Unlike the adults, young Black Rat snakes have a distinct pattern on their backs. Sadly, they are often mistaken for young venomous Copperheads. One just has to remember that young Copperheads have bright yellowish - green tails. Young Rat Black snakes do not.
