Description
The Burrowing Owl is an adorable "pint-sized" raptor that is active during the day and lives in open, treeless areas throughout North and South America.. It spends most of its time on the ground, where its sandy brown plumage provides camouflage from potential predators.
Burrowing owls have bright eyes; lack ear tufts and have a flattened facial disc. They are small in size (9 inches in height with a wingspan of 21 inches); have prominent white eyebrows and a white "chin" patch which they expand and display during certain behaviors.
Burrowing Owls eat a variety of insects, small reptiles, and small mammals. Born underground in burrows, their numbers have declined sharply with human alteration of their habitat and the decline of prairie dogs and ground squirrels whose burrows they often use.
