Photographed by Kathy Kelly, this male Common Whitetail dragonfly is one of the most adaptable North American dragonflies. Also known as the Long-tailed Skimmer, the Common Whitetail (Plathemis lydia) can be found at nearly any decent-sized standing or slow-flowing body of water.

The distinctively patterned males are unmistakable and habitually perch on the ground, branches, plants, or on tree trunks.
