Description
This photograph by Kathy Kelly is of a Great Blue Heron at the C & O Canal in Maryland. Whether poised at a river bend or cruising the coastline, the Great Blue Heron is a wondrous sight.
Decorated in a subtle blue-gray plumage, the Great Blue Heron often stands motionless as it scans for prey. Although these birds move slowly, they can strike with lightening speed to grab a fish or snap up a gopher.
Great blue herons are typically found around water, but occupy wide variety of wet habitats. They can be found hunting among rocky cascades, on streams and rivers, coastal beaches, swamps, and tidal marshes. They can even be found prowling meadows, farmlands, or backyards with fish ponds.
