Description
It's springtime and the banks along the Potomac River are awash in a carpet of Virginia Bluebells. With their bright green leaves and contrasting drooping bell-like blossoms, these flowers are "a buzz" with the sound of bumblebees.
This photograph, taken by Kathy Kelly, is of an Eastern bumblebee on a Virginia Bluebell flower. Busily foraging for pollen and nectar to take back to the nest, the Eastern bumblebee is a large, loud, and social creature. And while it may appear intimidating at first, it is, in fact, very gentle and rarely stings.
With the sun reflecting off it back, this bumblebee's wings appear flecked with pieces of copper and gold.
